Raíces de mi tierra: ritmos Afrodescendientes del Ecuador, la Bomba y la Marimba

Abstract

Within the historical context of cultural societies and ethnicities there are elements that have created an identity from the moment of its emergence. Talking about ancestral rhythms involves elements such as: customs, traditions, myths and stories, creeds, among others; all of this revolves around their musical surroundings. Sounds have a particular definition and identification and this happens with Afro-descendant rhythms which have resurfaced more strongly while maintaining Afro identity so that it does not go into oblivion. Establishing the differences that are immersed in the variety of Afro rhythms is of vital importance, since the diversity of their instruments is not only local to the ethnicities that are derived from the Afro-descendant people, but the territory is considered a factor that determines how and which instruments are applied within Afro culture. The content of the following article refers to Afro-descendant rhythms with the implementation of instruments such as the Bomb and the Marimba. It is important to recognize that the Afro people are not only located within the province of Esmeraldas but also, that there are also Afro-descendant peoples within the Ecuadorian mountains. All these rhythms have a unique style and undeniably which creates familiarity in those who listen to it for the first time; it is important not to confuse Ecuadorian Afro-Ecuadorian rhythms with Afro-descendant rhythms from other parts of Latin America which have similarity, but, their musical context based on the instruments implemented will not always be the same nor will the historical context involving their melodies. The Afro-descendant rhythms of Ecuadorian territory will then be explained in depth with the respective implementation of popular instruments such as the Marimba and La Bomba.
