Resumen traducido: There are different types of mobile robots of locomotion: crawler track; with legs; wheels; and hybrid combinations, each of this types are designed to operate and perform task in different environments. The main objective of the thesis is “to design and develop an intelligent prototype robot that is capable of performing movements like climbing of stairs with Tri – Star Wheel configuration controlled by PIC microcontrollers, sensors and activators.” The primary concept of the design is to permit the prototype robot to move and avoid obstacles, scan the condition of the route for secure continuation of its movement, which is provided by the grafos, permitting the search and the ultrasonic sensor control. The prototype robot posses four (4) “Y” axes each with three (3) wheels, and three (3) 12[V], 3[A], DC motors with internal reduction housed in a box, two (2) of these motors are employed for the forward, reverse and climbing movements, the other motor, to control the left and right movement. Due to the size of the wheels (2 [cm.] radius) and the design of the “Y’s”, the prototype is limited to climb the stairs that are greater than four (4) centimeters in height. The energy required for the motors and the control circuit are provided by one (1) 12 [V], 3 [A], rechargeable battery weighing 0,5 kilograms, the weight do not affect the performance of the prototype based on trial experiments. To achieve that the structure of the prototype is strong and light, the combination of aluminum, steel, acryl and plastic was employed. The total weight of the prototype is eleven (11) kilograms. To reduce the velocity and increase the torque, it was necessary to change the parameter and the dimension of the “Y’s” including the motors as to obtain the required results to climbing the stairs. It was necessary to change the control circuit due to difficulty encountered in locating the proper ultrasonic sensors in local market, requiring the reprogramming the main processor (mother board) on various occasions.
