Activación y revalorización del cerro Catequilla: diseño arquitectónico de un pabellón y estancia pública San Antonio de Pichincha, Ecuador

Abstract

Cerro Catequilla, located in San Antonio de Pichincha, is a geographical, astronomical, and cultural landmark, as it lies at latitude 0° 0’ 0’’. It was used by the Quitu-Cara and Caranqui cultures as a solar observatory since the 6th century. However, despite its historical and landscape significance, the site is currently in a state of neglect, with deteriorated paths, limited infrastructure, and urban disconnection—especially in contrast to the tourist influx at the Ciudad Mitad del Mundo. This condition has led to a loss of local identity and underutilization of its cultural value. The urban analysis developed in Taller III, within the framework of the international competition C40 Cities – Reinventing Cities, revealed these issues through fieldwork and community dialogue. The study identified the need to reintegrate the territory through a more equitable environmental, urban, and cultural vision. In response, the project proposes revitalizing the hill through the design of an underground architectural pavilion and a public gathering space that connect landscape, ancestral memory, and social cohesion. The design adapts to the topography, minimizes visual impact, and takes advantage of natural thermal comfort, reinforcing the symbolic value of the site. This intervention aims to position Catequilla as an identity landmark within the Metropolitan District of Quito, balancing urban development, heritage conservation, and the strengthening of community belonging.
