Análisis de la relación entre el estrés académico y el consumo de alcohol en estudiantes universitarios de la ciudad de Quito

Abstract

This research was conducted to analyze the relationship between academic stress and alcohol consumption among university students in Quito. The methodology used was mixed (quantitative and qualitative), and the sample consisted of 20 male and female students between the ages of 21 and 25. Two items were used to analyze the variables: the SISCO Academic Stress Inventory and the Alcohol Consumption Levels Assessment Test (AUDIT). For the qualitative analysis, a semi-structured interview was conducted to obtain information on the relationship between the two variables. According to the results it was verified that: 75% present a moderate level of academic stress, 25% a low level of stress, this is reflected in a comment where a student mentions: "...stress influences a lot when I have to meet a student requirement..." (Matrix 1), with this interpretation the causes of academic demands are corroborated. On the other hand, with alcohol consumption it was obtained that: 60% have a risky level of consumption, 25% are dependent on alcohol, and 15% present harmful consumption, evidenced in this comment "Once I had an alcoholic coma we consumed like four javas of beer...", therefore it is necessary to consider an in-depth analysis of these data. Through the use of the SPSS statistical program, a marginally significant relationship was observed between both variables, which suggests a possible association. However, further research with a larger population sample is recommended to validate these findings.
