La exclusión social en el salón de clase. Estudio de caso en séptimo año de educación general básica en una institución educativa de la ciudad de Quito

Abstract

The research was developed with the purpose of analyzing the different ways in which social exclusion occurs in the classroom of the seventh year of Basic General Education in an educational institution in the city of Quito. The work begins with the bibliographical review of theoretical references that address the issue, with which it was possible to identify the problem of social exclusion in the classroom. The study had a qualitative approach. The information was collected through observations considering the reality of a group of students who were subjected to exclusion by their own classmates. Interviews were also conducted with teachers from the educational institution. The compilation was done through field diaries and an interview guide. The results obtained show that there are various types of exclusion towards students, whether due to their ethnicity, gender, social status and some type of disability. Finally, it was determined that social exclusion in the classroom is a phenomenon present throughout the world, therefore it should not be underestimated or ignored. When students feel excluded or discriminated against for different reasons such as their physical appearance, their ethnic origin, their gender or some type of disability, they will be negatively affected both in their emotional well-being and in their academic performance.
