Resumen : This experimental work had the goal of assessing the antioxidant capabilities of five essential oils: Minthostachys mollis, Aristeguietia glutinosa, Ambrosia arborescens, Myrcianthes rhopaloides and Lantana camara; all of which were obtained from the Ecuadorian Andes. This work used the DPPH and ABTS methods to assess free radical-capturing capacity, and it used the β-carotene Test to determine the antioxidant activity of each essential oil. The natural referent used herein was Thymus vulgaris essential oil, and the positive control was BHA. According to the results obtained using the DPPH, ABTS and β-carotene methods, it was found that the best essential oils in terms of free-radical-capturing and antioxidant activity were Minthostachys mollis (IC50 DPPH 2,830µL/mL; IC50 ABTS 0,205µL/mL; and IC50 AA 0,119µL/mL) and Aristeguietia glutinosa (IC50 DPPH 12,972µL/mL; IC50 ABTS 0,321µL/mL; and IC50 AA 0,062µL/mL); whereas the rest of the essential oils showed low antioxidant activity. Further, using the Kruskal Wallis non-parametric test for DPPH and ABTS determined that there is no similarity between the essential oils’ and the natural reference’s IC50s; however, the values most approximate to the natural reference were those of Minthostachys mollis and Aristeguietia glutinosa. In order to determine the molecules responsible for antioxidant activity, this work used the DPPH bioautographic method, and chemical identities were revealed through a Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis. The molecules responsible for Minthostachys mollis antioxidant activity were thymol acetate and carvacrol acetate, whereas the molecule responsible for Aristeguietia glutinosa activity was muurolene
