Análisis del tratado de libre comercio entre Ecuador y la República Popular China: efecto en importación de bicicletas

Abstract

The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Ecuador and the People's Republic of China has had a significant impact on bicycle imports, transforming the commercial dynamics of this sector in the country. The elimination of tariffs has generated substantial changes in market supply and competition, benefiting both importers and consumers. However, not all bicycles can benefit from these advantages, as they must comply with the regulations of the Quality Management System of Origin (SIGCO) established by the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investment and Fisheries. The objective of this study is to analyse the effects of the FTA on bicycle imports from China. For this purpose, a qualitative methodology with a descriptive approach was used, based on the analysis of documentary data on imports between 2023 and 2024, complemented by interviews with importers and foreign trade experts. The results show an increase of 34.4% in the volume of bicycle imports and a reduction in tariff costs, which has encouraged the purchase of bicycles thanks to a better quality-price ratio, also generating a positive reaction in the behaviour of the market. It is concluded that the FTA has been a key factor in the growth of bicycle imports, strengthening the trade relationship between China and Ecuador and boosting this market segment.
