Análisis comparativo del tratamiento periodístico sobre salud mental: Estudio de caso El Comercio y El Extra, periodo 2020-2021

Abstract

Mental health is a problem rarely treated in the media, due to this, this research aims to recognize and contrast the journalistic treatment of mental health between the newspapers El Extra and El Comercio. A total of 1777 notes were identified in the health section of both newspapers, of which only 54 addressed the subject in question, corresponding to 3.04%. In the methodology, 10 notes were considered for the application of an analysis of scheduling setting and framing, which used the parameters of good practices proposed in the Mental Health Style Guide for the media (2019) and through which response to the research question that highlighted the concern to know how mental health issues are managed. Consequently, it was possible to show that anxiety, depression and stress disorders were treated more frequently in both media. Likewise, errors were found in the wording that reinforced the stigma that exists in relation to mental health. Finally, the article provides a different view of mental health and suggests delving into the depth of the contents that deal with this problem. Similarly, it claims the importance of eliminating stereotypes and curbing the marginalization of the subject in society as such, and specifically in the media.
