// In the high Andes of Ecuador, although expanding agricultural practices and overgrazing have had negative impacts on soil fertility, few investigations have been conducted to identify which practices are most likely to reduce fertility. Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoaWilld.)was grown in soils fromnative forests,Nf; pastures, Pa; Eucalyptus globulus Labill. plantations, Eg; and Pinus patula Schlecht. plantations, Pp. A bioassay studywas conducted using a randomized block design with control (C), ammonium nitrate (N), triple superphosphate (P), and combined N and P (N+P) fertilizer treatments. On soils from Pp, quinoa mortality was 100% in N, 88% in C, 63% in N+P and 0% in P; P enhanced growth the most; quinoa biomass attained only 0.1 g/pot and had a P content of 0.7mg/pot. N+P enhanced quinoa growth the most on soils from Nf, Pa and Eg. Here, quinoa biomass (g/pot) averaged 0.1 in C, 0.4 in N, 1.6 in P and
7.2 in N+P; P content (mg/pot) averaged 0.9 in C, 0.6 in N, 12 in P and 38 in N+P. In all soils, PO−4 was the principal limiting factor. K deficiencies and Al toxicity probably occurred only in Pp soils. This study suggests that the studied soils cannot support production of quinoa crops without additions of combined fertilizers containing P and K as the principal elements. Pp have the least fertile soils, presumably resulting from a longer history of use after pasturing in addition to the pine effect itself.

// An initial exploration of adaptation measures implemented to respond to ExtremeHidrometeorological Events (EHE) in agricultural systems was made, which were drawn from case studies in selected sites in Argentina, Brazil, Chile,
Colombia and Ecuador; the first challenge was to define an EHE; since the definition changes whether we use a meteorological or a Hydrological approach, besides, there is no agreement within the region on the definition of extreme values to characterize this events, and finally, in many of the study sites there are no records long and reliable enough in order to quantify this events; thus we decided to use an “empirical” definition of EHE, leaving to the stakeholders who lived the experience the decision on when an event of such nature occurred. Despite the differences in vulnerability and impacts on rural landscapes found in each case study, evidence suggests that the integrated management of the community level landscapes allows the agricultural producers to adopt adaptation measures in due course and prepare rural communities to face the EHE. Among the most important lessons learned, they were identified: the demand for an adequate information transfer; the need for the promotion of social capital; the importance of having a State playing a proactive role; the relevance of having a press that informs and not scandalize; and the need to have propermechanisms for cost estimation.

// Life Cycle Assessment is a trendsetter methodology in order to assess environmental and social impacts associated to an entire productive cycle in a vision “Cradle to Grave” or in a further vision “Cradle to Cradle” that considers the reuse of product wastes and side products, trying to take in count every single component of these impacts or almost all of them. In particular, this review considers that agro-productive chains have unique components and considerations, which need to be counted in the assessment process. These have been commented in the text and some calculation considerations were cited.

// Parasitic infestations are themain cause of productivity loss in the cattle industry in Ecuador. Thismakes necessary the
establishment ofmechanisms to help reduce these infestations through the use of alternative non-chemical treatments. This study evaluates the use of the aqueous extract from paico (Chenopodium ambrosioides) and the phytochemical extract from chocho (Lupinus mutábilis Sweet) to control gastrointestinal parasites in cattle. Different doses per kg of body weight were used with one and two applications, compared to a first control with no applications (absolute control) and a second control with Fenbendazol treatment (conventional control). Ten treatments were included with four repetitions, being one animal considered as an experimental unit. Treatmentswere assigned under a Randomized Complete Block Design. The variables evaluated were counting and identification of gastrointestinal parasites’ eggs
before each application, the effectiveness of the products, the curve of re-infestation of the effective products, daily weight gain, and the treatment cost. Results indicate that parasites found were Trichostrongylus sp., Haemonchus sp. y Eimeria sp. Also, an up to 100% of effectiveness in the reduction in the number of gastrointestinal parasites’ eggs depends on the doses and the number of applications; the period of re-infestation obeys to the residually of the product from the 30th day post-application and on, and the daily weight gain was not impacted by the parasites in the animal. This study concludes that organic products are a feasible biological and economic strategy to control gastrointestinal parasites.

// This paper seeks to estimate the threat of flooding by the effects of heavy rains, climate change and ENSO on the Machala city, Ecuador. Were studied seven weather stations of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology
(INAMHI), two of which had complete daily data of precipitation and temperature with more than 30 years. Climate change indices were identified using R-ClimDex program, comparing flooding reports of the National Secretariat for RiskManagement (SNGR) and the ONI Index. The results shown that Machala is a city at risk fromflooding in which extreme precipitation events are the main cause, which present increase both in intensity and frequency, which is consistent with the phenomenon of climate change. In addition it was found that flood and intense reain events are related to the occurrence of ENSO (Niño and Niña). Also was found that high values of minimum temperatures are increasing, more evidence that climate change could be affecting the study area.

// Neotropical wildlife conservation requires awareness increase of their habitat knowledge. The purpose is identify the potential geographical distribution of the habitat of the Cuniculus Paca (guanta) in the western of Ecuador. TheMaxent program used for identification of the habitat and Geographic Information System (GIS) for the algebraic crossing of the geographical factors (landforms, land uses and population density). The abiotic variables that determine the habitat are the precipitation of quarter more warm, the quarter more dry and the quarter more cold and the altitude. The potential area of 19.948 Km2, which 5% of native forest, 37.18% of hills, 26.25% of alluvial plains and 36% of high population density. We conclude that the optimum habitat of the species is very involved and it is therefore proposed as a measure of environmental reconstruction the design of ecological corridors and buffer zones.Maxent is a reliable predictor (AUC of 0.98) that combined a with a GIS are obtained a more precise geographic distribution.

// This paper aims to show the determinant role of ancestral and traditional knowledge to achieve sustainability of horticultural systems. A study case with peasants of Parroquia San Joaquín, Cantón Cuenca, was developed. A key element was to acknowledge the stability of productivity in such horticultural systems across time. For this purpose, we implemented The Framework for the Evaluation of Natural Resource Management Systems Incorporating Sustainability Indicators (MESMIS). Production practices of a conventional farm and nine farms characterized as agroecological were compared. Critical points of horticultural systems related to sustainability and the relationship with production intensification were identified. Results achieved show that between 60% (3/5) and 78% (3,9/5) of the farms satisfy the environmental indicators thresholds. However, the social or economic indicators had a greater range
between 64% (3,2/5) and 98% (4,9/5) fulfillment and 60% (3/5) and 78% (3,9/5) respectively. The study concludes that the horticultural systems have a high degree of sustainability, demonstrated by the high performance of environmental, economic and social indicators. The ancestral and traditional practices developed by peasant farmers such as association for production and commercialization, with a direct influence in the generation of economic benefits and improvements in life quality of peasant family, are the most relevant elements.
